Cake Decorating – A Brief History
Decorating cakes to make them more visually appealing for inclusion in gift hampers dates back to approximately the mid 17th century, which elaborately decorated cakes that appeared at banquets and other celebrations hosted by the Aristocracy in Europe.
The French then started a tradition in the mid-19th century of including dessert as a separate course served at the end of a meal using decorated cakes. This tradition then spread across Europe with decorative cakes making regular appearances at the table.
The popularity of decorated cakes has increased and has since become an integral part of the sugar craft industry and even an art form, with decorated cakes being a focal point of special celebrations such as Weddings, Anniversary, Birthdays, Bridal Showers, Baby Showers, Christenings and Graduations.
One interesting point is that unique styles of decorating have developed over the years in various countries like Australia, South Africa, Europe and America.
